2012 – The Birth of Pugilist Sound
February 10-12, 2012
Theme: 33 1/3 Trivia Long Play
Team Name: Pugilist Sound
Ranking: 34/67
Team Play Location: The Bockfather’s, Capitol Hill

Unfortunately, there currently aren’t any pictures from this event. It was our first year and we had no idea what was to come. The team was started in 2012 by St. Cloud State alumnus Chris Bocklund – The Bockfather. He was unable to return to St. Cloud for Trivia Weekend in 2012 and a glorious new Seattle tradition – Pugilist Sound – was born. We took over the house attempting to be respectful to the roommates, furiously typing the night away. The team gelled quickly and at the post-trivia feast at The Canterbury (RIP), we vowed to meet again on the fields of trivia battle the following year.
If you have any pictures from this year, please send them to crockpotposse@gmail.com so they can be shared here.

2013 – A New Tradition for Pug-A-List Sound
February 8-10, 2013
Theme: Trivia 2013: A Space Oddity
Team Name: Pugilist Sound
Ranking: 28/62
Team Play Location: Nerdhalla, Beacon Hill

In year 2, the team moved to roomier accommodations on Beacon Hill at Nerdhalla. Air Bud memes were extremely popular this year and we got in on the Twitter meme fun for the first time (note the subtle Air Bud in the first image). We even had a real live Air Bud come visit us! Nugget the adorable puppy’s owner is also a St. Cloud State alum, and she saw there was a trivia team actually playing in Seattle. They came to bolster our spirits on Day 3 with donuts and puppy lovins. Trivia is crazy like that – you literally never know who you will meet or talk to.
The sleepy on-air talent butchered our team name in Hour 45, calling us PugAList Sound. This misspeak plus days of Air Bud memes led to the birth of a new team mascot.

We got a proper snow in our 3rd year of trivia and a proper taste of the snowy Minnesota trivia experience. Our team was beset by winter illness and snowy roads, but we pressed on for another year of trivia marathon insanity. The trivia question writers leveled up their writing game and figured out how to hide answers on sports stats on dates associated with much more prominent and newsworthy events. Diabolical.
Due to the consistent mispronunciation of our team name, we had a proper Pug A List Sound mascot commissioned by graphic novel artist Tomas Overbai.

Team Play Location: Nerdhalla, Beacon Hill

Not gonna lie. This was a rough-ass year. The team size reached its smallest point and there were a couple of overnight hours with solo players. Trivia Weekend overlapped with Valentines Day and a room of furiously typing/shouting nerds isn’t quite as romantic as a private dinner and woo-hoo for two. There was an audio trivia speed round of nothing but poop and fart sounds from movies (Game of Thrones – get it?). It was insane. We had gotten very spoiled by our early years of large team sizes, so some important lessons were learned on how to run a leaner team. If you have pics from this year, please send them to crockpotposse@gmail.com.

2016 – The Dawn of the Posse
February 12-14, 2016
Theme: Trivia Crusin’: Racing, Road Tripping, and Rock & Roll
Team Name: Crockpot Posse
Ranking: ?/59
Team Play Location: Williams Estate, South Seattle

2016 marks the first year of Crockpot Posse. Taking the lessons learned from Pugilist Sound, the team refocuses on the core elements that make KVSC Trivia Weekend so special – friends, delicious shared meals, and the insane mental and physical endurance challenges of a 50 hour trivia marathon. 5 members from Pugilist Sound continued to Crockpot Posse, and added 3 more for a total of 8 in 2016. Two kitties joined the team and were exactly as useful at typing and calling the phone bank as you would expect. Once again, we forgot to log the rankings, but banked somewhere in the neighborhood of 7000 points.

Theme: Trivia Storm
Team Name: Crockpot Posse
Ranking: 25/57
Team Play Locations: Williams Estate, South Seattle; Brunner Palace, Everett; Allen-St. John Manor, Capitol Hill

For the first time in team history, we had multiple team play locations in Seattle. The loss of a central hub in 2016 led to the creation of new team collaboration and automation tools and the team was able to grow and onboard new members quickly. A new batch of trivia-lovin’ friends caught the trivia marathon bug on the last day and a half and brought an additional kitty baby with them into the trivia family. (She even eventually let me touch her, kinda, once. It was magical.) Our cat team size grew enough we dominated the #catsoftriviaweekend social media game and earned them recognition for their adorable contributions to team morale (and absolutely nothing else). We had multiple perfect rounds, AND WE ANSWERED THE GYPSY MUSIC QUESTION! 25th was the highest team placement to date proving the Posse was here to stay and stronger than ever with our friends new and old.

After joining at the end of the previous year, a new group of trivia junkies host a new trivia hub, bringing the Posse back to central Seattle. The table the team plays on is the pub trivia table our new teammates have been sitting at and dunking on the local Seattle bar trivia population for years. It offers good luck and good support. The team embraces the crockpot lifestyle and great food is had all weekend long. Dueling roasts simmer at both hubs, north and central, casting a strong meaty spell over the region for Trivia Weekend. Peabody takes on her role as cat mascot with adorable yet aloof aplomb. In all the excitement of the expanded team, we didn’t log the ranking, but the year was a great success with everyone excited to return and host again.

KVSC celebrates the 40th anniversary of Trivia Weekend. The team reaches a new high of 23rd place and breaks 10,000 points for the first time. While breaking new high scores, the team also finds time to bring home some social media wins with “7th Most Awkward Tweet.” Peabody keeps the team spirits up with late night bleps as a dutiful kitty team member. The team experiments with printing swag but is thwarted by a snow storm the day of the printing party.

Angelina and Aaron open their new home to our trivia debauchery and expand the trivia hub once more. The Trivia Weekend atmosphere returns to the 50 hour party vibe present in the early years of Pugilist Sound. Great meals are made and shared with new friends stopping by to check out the crazy game they’ve heard about from friends. The team adds new members from the curious newcomers, and the tradition of spreading the word of KVSC Trivia Weekend continues. Unfortunately, this will be the last trivia before the global pandemic lockdown a few short weeks later.

2020.5 – My Posse’s on Lockdown
April 18, 2020
Theme: U Cant Touch This
Team Name: CoughPot Posse
Ranking: 34/102
Team Play Location: Virtual

Amidst the global COVID pandemic and stay at home orders, and two short months after 2020 Trivia Weekend, KVSC conceives of a bonus 10 hour trivia game to bolster the community’s spirits. Crockpot Posse joins the game along with 101 other teams, the largest number we’ve ever competed against. Zoom was still offering crazy open room deals, and the team gathered virtually for the first time. We hoped we would be able to meet in person in 2021, but were grateful for the opportunity to spend some time together with the game we love. The awards ceremony was held virtually as well, allowing the Posse to “attend” and represent for the first time.

February 12-14, 2021
Theme: Trivia at Play
Team Name: All Your Crockpot Are Belong to Posse
Ranking: 29/58
Team Play Location: Virtual

The game is drastically changed in the face of the global COVID pandemic. No longer able to host in-person phone banks, KVSC is forced to eliminate overnights from the game. The game drops to 33 hours from 50 with breaks overnight. The team is entirely virtual, meeting over Zoom and making full use of the already established collaboration tools. A massive snow storm that weekend would have likely hampered getting together in-person, but the team still missed spending time together all the same. The most notable achievement of the year was catching a discord IP ban from the Game Design and Development Club at UC Berkley as we all flooded an active club session to ask about an inscription one of their professors wrote in an obscure board game. We never got the answer.

2022 – COVID Comes for the Crockpot
February 18-20, 2022
Theme: LITerally Trivia: A Novel Idea
Team Name: Crockpot Posse
Ranking: 38/51
Team Play Location: Virtual

Due to pandemic distancing precautions, KVSC is still unable to host in-person phone banks, so the game is reduced from 50 to 38 hours with no overnights. COVID finally took its toll on the Crockpot Posse. The ongoing COVID surge and the individual health and occupation needs of the members keeps the team virtual. After nearly 2 years of socializing and working through computer screens, the team is burned out on that screen life. The team size drops back down to 6 and for the first time the team has early morning hours with no teammates playing. The team philosophy of “participate to your level of comfort” is staunchly adhered to and the time the team members do put in is valued and celebrated. At the end we all agree we love the game, but it really is best played together. We can’t wait until we can be together again.

2023 – You Want the Crockpot? You Can’t Handle the Crockpot!
February 17-19, 2023
Theme: Trivia on Trial
Team Name: Crockpot Counsel of the Pacific Northwest
Ranking: 30/50
Team Play Location: Baldinez Bungalow, West Seattle

What a great gift to finally come together again. We had two new teammates and a new trivia hub in West Seattle to break in. The game operates under restricted hours as the phone bank works to rebuild capacity. With two, 5 hour overnight breaks, the game totals 40 hours. The phonebank operates for the first time as a hybrid in-person and at-home system. As a fun bonus, T-Mobile customers have dropped calls in the new system (T-Mobile is headquartered here and the majority of the team has T-Mobile). We lost crockbot this year but experimented with AI chatbots ChatGPT and YouChat. One new teammate even had access to the Bing AI beta. ChatGPT named our team when we stalled out trying find legal themed crockpot puns, and Dall-E spit out a beautiful Lady Justice Crockpot Mascot. This was definitely the year of the AI conversation and the pure, raw, insane AI chatbot lies. Classic trivia moments are back in play and ridiculous phone calls to museums and pizza places are back (sorry Nick’s Pizza in St. Paul). Another new teammate answered the 250 point question of hour 39 (49). MAJOR accomplishment. While the team was less active on social media this year, we did manage to coin the hashtag #twogate, leading the call for the proper analysis of Eddie Vedder’s dental records in hour 33. The overnight homework breaks kicked our butts. We proved we can’t be trusted with overnight breaks – no one wants to wake back up at 5am. We lost a few hours and Allison carried the team alone for several early morning hours. Overall the team held strong figuring out post-covid trivia and proved we’re here to crockpot another day.
